If that’s so, then that’s the routine you’re going to start building into this stage, layer by layer. It’s important that you keep your leaving routine as simple, predictable and consistent as possible. No long drawn out, ‘I’m going now’ (as you look under the settee for your left shoe), ‘Here I go, love you’ (as you cartwheel past the kitchen door looking for your car keys) . . . ‘See you, this is me leaving’ (as you climb the chandelier looking for your right shoe) . . . ‘Off I go . . .’, etc.

Be consistent, be predictable, but don’t leave Holly hovering at the amber light forever. This stage will look like the early stages of Exercise Two, in the respect that you’re letting Holly into the chill-out zone without asking her to do any specific behaviour, combined with Exercise One, as you gradually increase distance (but this time with no formal down), layer by layer adding extra elements of your leaving routine before heading back into the chill-out zone to rejoin Holly.
